Description:

Walnut Elementary School is one of nine elementary, three middle, and two high schools within the Walnut Valley Unified School District. The staff has taken the LEAP through the belief that EVERY student can succeed. Love, Energy, Audacity, and Proof are behind every decision we make to benefit our students. Our school-wide pledge is to invest in their futures by implementing innovative programs, strong interventions, expanded learning opportunities, and technology-enhanced learning. As a result, in two years, our Academic Performance Index (API) score has climbed 45 points to 911 and our Grade 5 math scores are the highest in the district.

Our Dual Language Immersion Program continues to expand. Two kindergarten and first grade classes currently receive instruction in Mandarin 50% of the day and English the other 50%. Second grade classes will be added in 2013-2014. We also have after-school Mandarin instruction and a Spanish club. We have also planned to have online world language instruction. Teachers embed technology including document cameras, LCD projectors, and SMARTBoards into their classroom instruction. Students use iTouch, iPads, laptops, and student responders throughout their school day. Ongoing fundraising is targeted to purchase additional 1:1 devices in our classrooms.

Walnut Elementary broadens student experiences in STEM with hands-on science, Mind Institute Spatial/Temporal math and keyboarding, performing arts including string, band and general music, and art instruction. We have student-led lunchtime recycling and received a grant from Lowe’s for eco-friendly gardening and composting.

Join us for our Rodeo Round-up on the first Friday in May to see our sense of spirit and community. There is something for everyone at Walnut Elementary!
